Frequently Asked Questions

Can you offer one-off consultation?

Of course! Our Inspirational Visit is a great value way to get professional interior design advice.

Want to make some changes but not sure on palettes or layouts? Let’s spend some time looking at the room and how we can make it absolutely perfect for you.

Ann will come to your home or workplace, identify your specific interior design problems and create solutions specifically for you. We can focus on one room or do a swift run through the whole place. It is great fun and totally personal to you and your lifestyle or workstyle.

After the day you will receive a detailed report, outlining all the suggestions and ideas, which act as your ‘to do’ list – you can either implement yourself or ask us to follow up on using our services. Should you follow up using our services and implement the design we will discount the cost of your Inspiration Day in full!

Do you charge for your first meeting?

No. Our first meeting is free of charge – it’s an opportunity for you to get to know us and see if we’re a good fit for your project.

Do you have tradespeople you can recommend or do we need to source our own?

We have a number of tradespeople that we work with and are more than happy to liaise with them on your behalf.  These include carpenters, painters & decorators, builders, electricians, kitchen & bathroom fitters, curtain & blind makers and upholsterers.  Obviously, you may also have your own tradespeople that you would prefer to use and we are also happy to work with these as well.

How do you charge for your professional design time?

We offer a fee arrangement that simply reflects our time employed, not the value of the project, its location or at which stage it is at. On most projects we provide a fixed fee for each stage as this provides transparency from the outset.

As each project is unique and requires different elements we do not have general costs. Each project is researched and our fees based on our experience of the duration each stage.

Our substantial discounts from our extensive supplier networks are passed on to benefit you – these typically exceed any design fees.

I don’t know what my design style is or how to articulate it, should I still work with an interior designer?

This is something that is said to us almost weekly! Rest assured we have a unique assessment system to draw out what colours, textures, images, shapes, finishes and feelings resonate with you. Your answers inform our design process.

Our favourite part of our job is helping you create a space that’s completely unique to your personality and not a replica of “specific style” that looks done and impersonal.

I have a project but I’m not sure if I need an interior designer or an architect?

This is a common question. Typically an architect is used – when the work concerns the outer shell of the building i.e. external walls, roof etc. and an interior designer – when the work includes the design and specification of interior finishes, furniture or fabrics. Of course there is , anything in between – which represents a very broad range – could be done by either, but it will ultimately come down to their individual expertise and experience.

Ann Cope is able to undertake both types of work and uses architects and structural engineers where needed but will do most of the layout and drawings in-house, saving you costs on these other professions.

I haven’t used an interior designer before, what do I do?

Simple, let’s talk! As a potential new client, my aim is to develop an understanding of what you are hoping to achieve. We will discuss the potential budget and timeline for your project and I will offer my advice.

During our first phone call we will discuss what you want to change about your home/workspace, any ideas you may have already had regarding a redesign, your personal taste and style etc. You can ask me about my business and the services that I offer and how they will be able to help you.

I would like to re-design my home or office but I don’t have a lot of time to devote to the process, should I still hire a designer?

Yes, most definitely – leave it to us! We can manage the whole project – shopping, ordering and delivery of finish materials, furnishings and fixtures, as well as coordinate and oversee contractors. We’ll bring selections to your home or office and try to make it as convenient as possible, so you can spend more time doing what you do best.

My project only involves re-decorating my space, how does a professional interior designer’s skills differ from an in-store decorator at a local furniture, tile, or kitchen and bath showroom?

Many times retail in-store decorators are primarily sales people. They’ve had only a limited education in interior design and space planning, unlike professional interior designers who attend comprehensive, accredited 3-4 year interior design programs at colleges.

Typically, in-store decorators are not as well versed in scale, proportion, space planning, colour theory and health and safety issues. Also, they’ll only offer you product selections from their featured lines. We have access to hundreds of trade-only vendors and manufacturer’s world wide. If you decide to use an in-store designer be sure to ask about their qualifications to determine if they’re the right match for your job.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover the South East and East Anglia in the UK most of the time. We are available to travel further a field at special request.
